Best Time to Get a 3d Ultrasound With Twins

Many parents at our studio ask us this question wondering about the best time for a 4D ultrasound appointment. In general, our suggestion is to have the 3D/4D ultrasound done between the 25th and 29th week of pregnancy since these are the best weeks. We find that the best images are obtained around 27 weeks of pregnancy. With multiple pregnancies, the optimal time is earlier (22-27 weeks).

What is the best time for the 4D ultrasound?

In general, most women get their first ultrasound scan between 10 weeks and 14 weeks of pregnancy at their doctor, to verify their due date (also called the dating ultrasound) and to have an early indication of the health of the pregnancy.

If you are an expectant mother looking to capture those early pictures of your baby, start planning to have the ultrasound booked at an appropriate time. Generally, for optimal results, full 4D ultrasound packages can be carried out between 26 and 29 weeks of pregnancy. We can still schedule the 3D or 4D ultrasound up until 32 weeks with relatively good results, but the risks of the baby covering are higher at that time.

If you schedule an appointment with A Date With Baby for a 4D scan, then considering it within the time-frame mentioned above will be the best choice. This is because it will be the best time to see your baby's clear movements inside the womb. As the baby grows, the space (fluid) in the womb reduces and we stand a greater risk of not seeing the baby all that well. If the position and fluid amounts are right (which is usually the case before 30 weeks), you will be amazed to see your baby playing with his or her toes, open their eyes, even yawn and smile.

At A Date With Baby 3D/4D ultrasound, we do offer an early pregnancy ultrasound for those anxious parents who would like to see the baby in their early stages of development. These scans are booked starting at 8 weeks of pregnancy and up until 16 weeks. During these sessions, you will see the baby's movements and see and hear the heartbeat. Depending on the stage of pregnancy, you may see the baby's movements limbs, and body in different development stages, and as well as reveal the baby's gender.

If you are already past 30 weeks, don't fret, as we do have a solution for later pregnancies as well. The Late Pregnancy package will include a shorter session, dedicated to seeing the baby's face. As we cannot guarantee the amount and quality of pictures at that stage, we limit the number of pictures we set to provide, and no video recording is available for this package. However, if we notice that the baby's position is great and we are able to get good images, we will happily switch over to a full package, if you'd like! We have had many cases of very late pregnancies where the fluid amount was quite high allowing us to capture beautiful, life-like pictures.

If you are pregnant with twins, you can have a 4D scan at our studio as we often have the pleasure of meeting women with multiple pregnancies. However, please bear in mind that you should consider a couple of things before booking your ultrasound appointment to see your twins.

When to get 3D Ultrasound?

The best time for a 3D/4D scan for mothers expecting to deliver twins or other multiples is a little earlier than single pregnancies.

 As you can imagine, twins or other multiple pregnancy babies will occupy more space than single pregnancies. Having a good amount of fluid (space for babies to move around) is the key factor in seeing the baby well. If you consider a time frame of 25-29 weeks with singular pregnancies, with multiples, we have to account for less space, and therefore having the 3D ultrasound done a little earlier. Generally speaking, the more babies there are, the earlier it would be recommended to get the 4D ultrasound done. So, with twins consider booking at 23-27 weeks, with triplets 20-25 and so on.

Later in your third trimester, you may be recommended to have a growth scan, which is carried out between 28 weeks and 40 weeks at the medical facility of your choice. This scan is ordered by a physician and as with any other medical ultrasound, is not performed at our 4D ultrasound studio.
